Halo Halo is the Philippines star desert and you can find it from little street stalls, served in plastic cups, to high-end restaurants. We first tried it in a franchise fast food chain called Chow King and as you can see from the picture our Halo Halo was served to us in a tall glass. At the very bottom is a dark sweet syrupy sauce which is topped with coconut shaved ice. Now the fun really begins when more toppings such as candied fruit jellies, hominy beans, dried bananas, and oats are added to it. And for the "gran finale" a scoop of Ube (a purple sweet potato) ice cream is dropped on top completing the dessert.
Halo Halo es el postre estrella de las Filipinas y puedes encontrarlo en los puestos callejeros, servidos en vasos de plástico, hasta en los restaurantes más reputados. Nosotros lo probamos en una franquicia de restaurantes llamados Chow King y venía servido en una copa alta de cristal. En el fondo de la copa había un sirope dulce como caramelo y encima hielo picado mezclado con leche de coco. Ahora empieza lo más curioso con más adornos de gominolas, frutas escarchadas, gelatinas, garbanzos, plátanos secos y avena etc. Y para el "gran finale" una bola de helado de ube (una batata morada) puesta en lo más alto para completar el postre.
Now as you can probably imagine for the westerner this type of combination doesn't sound that appealing but after some convincing from fellow traveler Chris who is Filipino-American, and the fact that he was buying, we decided "hey, when in Dumaguete.....", why not. Chris our Halo Halo expert instructed us on how to eat it, "first mix everything together, but careful not to much". I followed our instructions carefully but when curiosity got the best of me, I stopped mixing and dipped in with my long spoon trying to get a little bit of everything on it, which is impossible, and took my first bite. The sweet crunchy shaved ice made me inhale sharply at the coldness of it but my mouth was quickly distracted by a gummy bear texture and then it stumbled upon a bean! Finally I swallowed, looked around at the others, saw the same looks of surprise and bewilderment on their faces and then quickly turned back to my Halo Halo and went in for another spoonful.
Ahora como puedes imaginar para el occidental esta combinación no suena muy apetitosa pero después de un poco de insistencia por parte de un amigo viajero Chris que es filipino-americano y el hecho de que nos invitaba decidimos probarlo. Chris nuestro experto en Halo Halo nos instruyo en como comerlo " primero hay que mezclarlo todo pero cuidado no demasiado". Seguimos las instrucciones hasta por fin ya no aguantamos más y metimos nuestras cucharas intentando coger un poco de todo (lo cual era imposible) para hacer el bocado perfecto. El hielo picado, dulce y crujiente, me hizo inhalar fuerte a causa del frío pero enseguida me distrajo una gominola y justo después encontré un garbanzo. Trague y mire las caras a mi alrededor y vi que ellos también estaban sorprendidos y incrédulos pero rápidamente volví a mi copa y busque más.
ABC, ais batur campur, or in English, shaved ice is to the Malaysians what the Banana split is to us Americans. Again a glance at the picture above and you would probably agree that this would not be on the top of our list as a must try food but we were feeling brave and daring after our Halo halo experience and although we had no foodie guide or local with us to egg us on we decided on our own to order going even the extra mile and ordering an "ABC special". This time the desert was served in a bowl and after observing others we saw that there was no mixing involved, instead other diners would work their way around making their own combinations on their spoons. Just like in the Halo Halo the base is shaved ice with a molasses like syrup, topped with fruit, a scoop of vanilla ice cream, crushed peanuts and a sweet golden sauce. Around the towering mass were red beans, creamy sweet corn, black jellies, green bean jelly look a likes and a clear candied jelly. I couldn't tell you the flavors of these jellies as they really had none. So after turning the bowl around a few times and staring at the dish in awe we quickly dipped in with our spoons and then again and again, trying to get every possible combination of flavors and textures out of each bite.

Otra vez solo hay que mirar a la foto para entender que este plato normal,ente no estaría en nuestra lista de comidas que hay que probar pero después de nuestra experiencia con el Halo Halo decidimos pedir lo y ir más lejos y pedir el "ABC especial". Esta vez el postre vino servido en un cuenco grande y después de observar otros comensales vimos que no había que mezclarlo sino más bien dar vueltas al cuenco buscando la combinación que más gusta. Igual que el Halo Halo en la base hay hielo picado combinado con un sirope dulce y coronado con fruta una bola de helado de vainilla, cacahuetes y una salsa dulce dorada. A su alrededor había alubias pintas, crema de maíz dulce, una gelatina negra, otra verde que parecía judías verdes y una gominola transparente. No podía distinguir sus sabores porque no tenía ninguno. Después de dar vueltas al cuenco decidimos probar un bocado, luego otro y otro intentando probar todas las combinaciones posibles.
So what's the verdict? Drumroll............. The winner is Halo Halo. The combination of flavors and textures some how blend together and the appearance of it makes you feel like you are a kid again. The ABC on the other hand was too off the wall, the textures were not as distinguishable and the flavors didn't seem to blend as well. Unlike the Halo Halo which we actually had again later on our own, the ABC after just a few bites we pushed to the side not finishing it and allowing it to melt in the sun.
Entonces ¿cuál es mejor? ............... El ganador Halo Halo. La combinación de sabores y texturas de manera sorprendente hacen buena mezcla y por su aspecto te hace sentir como un niño en una fiesta de cumpleaños. Por otro lado el ABC era demasiado raro con sabores indistinguibles y la combinación era más bien insípida. El ABC, no como el Halo Halo ,que lo pedimos por nuestra cuenta en otra ocasión, después de unos bocados lo apartamos dejándolo derretir al sol.
Like in almost all of Asia you can find some pretty unappealing dishes to the eye or nose but most times, not all, the combinations of sweet, spicy, chewy, creamy etc is usually just right making for a surprisingly interesting dish. Como en casi todos los países asiáticos se puede encontrar platos típicos que al ojo y nariz no son muy atractivos pero en casi todos los casos las combinaciones de dulce, picante, cremoso etc son muy correctos haciendo un plato realmente interesante.
